The Revelation of Two Mysteries

Adam and Eve fell into sin and death because of their willful act of disobedience, lacking faith. They have committed the act of omission They now stand naked before God, realizing their guilt. This will be true for all people on the Day of Judgment.
The most natural division of all offenses is into those of omission and those of commission. ~Addison
Adam and Eve had no mediator between them and God The Father. The difference today is that the Law has already been given to mankind through Moses (the Law giver) and the nation Israel. Now, The Son of God, the Second Adam, The Messiah, will come as a Jew, fulfilling the promises that God declared through Adam, Abel, Seth, Noah and the Covenant to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Israel). God's mystery has now been revealed through the New Covenant. By faith, through the death of Jesus Christ, will salvation be attained. There is no other way unto God.

We must ever be mindful that it was God himself who hung on the cross so that we could be reconciled to him for time and eternity. Hank Hanegraaff [1]

Death has now entered the world. Yet, there is no law nor is there idolatry. We have seen the two divisions of mankind given clearly between Cain and Abel. One is the way of righteousness, the way of faith. The other is the way of sin, the way of Cain.

Cain was born into sin; he was born a sinner already. This is the penalty of all the offspring that will come from Adam and Eve. For they were our first parents, and all people can trace their roots back to the beginning. [2] They were deceived by a spiritual being who lied to them, in the intentioned act to deny what the Lord their God had told them. The attempt was given as so to turn away from God and listen to their own feelings and emotions. They were deceived, for they knew not sin - temptation. This is the way in which idolatry and divination will come to manifest itself, in open rebellion, by calling upon a spirit world for the attempt to communicate with man, because of that which he seeks in his heart; what is God saying to me.

We now see, two mysteries of God beginning to unfold. We have seen Satan tempting Adam to sin, which was accomplished though Eve. Both fell under the condemnation of death. This was God's judgment, given for, if in that day they ate of the fruit. Here, we see God beginning to unfold his plan, the revelation of the Second Adam, the Messiah, The Son of God. We also see that of a fallen and wicked spirit world, which will attempt to oppose this revelation, this mystery, from taking root, first through the Jew (Old Testament) and the nation Israel, then second, to the Gentiles (New Testament) and the whole world. Each are called a mystery and each clearly reveal the two divisions of mankind.

God understands human history because the events that comprise it correspond with his own intentions: he wills all that happens, and does so to accomplish his own purpose (Dan:2:37; 5:21; Rom:11:25-36). People, on the other hand, both because of their sin and because of their human limitations, remain ignorant of God's purpose when left to their own reckoning (Dan:2:27-30; Mark:4:10-12; Luke:19:41-44). God graciously responds to this human inadequacy by revealing his purpose to his people. When God's purpose is revealed in this way, the Bible frequently refers to it as a "mystery." --Frank Thielman [3]

And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Genesis 3:15

The 1599 Geneva Study Bible
He chiefly means Satan, by whose action and deceit the serpent deceived the woman. That is, the power of sin and death. Satan shall sting Christ and his members, but not overcome them.Moses declared to the Israelites that the nations which they were about to enter, hearken unto a spirit world and they are not to learn the ways of those people. Instead, they are to follow and obey the Law, which Moses gave to them. We clearly see from the beginning, the revelation of Satan. He is rarely revealed in the Old Testament , and is the other mystery that will be revealed.

The revelation of two mysteries

  • For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. 2Thessalonians 2:7
  • Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: Ephesians 1:5-14
John Wesley's Explanatory Notes: Genesis, chapter 3

Chapter Overview
The general contents of this chapter we have Romans 5:12. By one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned. More particularly, we have here:
  • The innocent tempted v.1-5
  • The tempted transgressing v.6,7,8
  • The transgressors arraigned v.9,10
  • Upon their arraignment convicted v.11-13
  • Upon their conviction sentenced, v.14-19
  • After sentence, reprieved v.20,21
  • Notwithstanding their reprieve, execution in part done, v.2:2-24, and were it not for the gracious intimations of redemption, they and all their race had been left to despair.
Gracious promise is here made of Christ as the deliverer of fallen man from the power of Satan.
  • By faith in this promise, our first parents, and the patriarchs before the flood, were justified and saved; and to this promise, and the benefit of it, instantly serving God day and night they hoped to come.
Notice is here given them of three things concerning Christ.
  • His incarnation, that he should be the seed of the woman.
  • His sufferings and death, pointed at in Satan's bruising his heel, that is, his human nature.
  • His victory over Satan thereby. Satan had now trampled upon the woman, and insulted over her; but the seed of the woman should be raised up in the fulness of time to avenge her quarrel, and to trample upon him, to spoil him, to lead him captive, and to triumph over him (Col:2:15).
Adam, Eve and Cain were guilty of the natural transgression of sin, which was found within their hearts; iniquity was found in them, just as iniquity was found in Lucifer. So it is true with Adam and Eve and to their children. They did not believe God and instead followed the way of the Serpent, they followed the way of sin. Adam ate of the fruit, not because Satan tempted him but to please Eve. It is reasonable to presume that Adam could not had been be tempted by Satan. Adam knew his position of Headship and dominion over all the earth. Satan became Lord of this world because he took the title of [dominion] (Eph:6:12) away from Adam and as a result of his sin omission, his transgression was judged. God stands fair, just and righteous with Adam.

The Lord Jesus bought back this title by His own blood, redeeming the earth and all those who choose to be called sons of God, through his atoning death, to defeat sin and wickedness, because God so loved the world that He sent his son, to take the place of death, for mankind cannot redeem himself. They knew of the consequences if they disobeyed, but even more, they were deceived and blinded to truth; that God will judge sin because He is Holy. The just punishment of God towards Adam and Eve was death and they were changed from eternal beings, as we will become in God's kingdom, to mortal beings, now subject to death.
Genesis 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
Idolatry and divination will eventually take hold and prosper as we progress further, following the line of Cain, through Canaan and eventually to his descendants, the Canaanites. What we have seen with Adam and Eve are sins of omission. Sin has now come forward and without law it cannot be imputed, for imputing, is determined by the act of commission. And so, for God's judgment to be fair; sin will be judged by the acts of commission, the acts against that which has been revealed.

What we will find is that Cain continues in this transgression, falling deeper into moral corruption by murdering Abel. Through Cain we will find sin deepening as the heart is turned over unto it's own devices, where no moral law has been given to govern it, to reveal it. This is willful transgression and demonstrates an active lack of faith; the active disobedience towards God.

We will find that idolatry and divination will develop from this type of rebellion, the willful rejection of God because man seeks his own morality, authority and judgment. Man will come to the place where he will invent his own god[s] and attempt to bring them to life through the calling of the spirit world, by the making of an image, which we have seen in this series that God declares as an willful act of commission, an abomination. Cursed Children, is what the Apostle Peter declared:

Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:.....

....But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire. 2Peter 2:14-22

We see their omission because they violated God's only requirement; But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die (Gen:3:3). This is the transgression, the beginning of rebellion to what God has revealed. Here is the axiom, which proves itself; mankind is a sinful creature, in rebellion of God and in need of a Savior. This is what the Law reveals, and this is what God revealed to Adam and Eve.

Adam and Eve were banished from Eden, becoming mortal beings now subject unto death. This was the punishment for transgressing the command, which God had clearly given to them. They fell into sin, and where the law is transgressed, judgment is given. God judged this pre-flood world the same as He did with the Canaanites, as He judged Israel, because of their wickedness and rebellion.

For the Israelites, as seen with the Gold Calf and the worship of Moloch, they transgressed the law which they accepted and was clearly revealed. Theirs was; transgression of commission. This will be the way in which idolatry and divination will enter. This is the way of sin. This is the way of Cain. Adam and Eve were shown forgiveness for their sin and will have to come to God through the way of faith, like all those who will come to God.
